Detoxing: why it should be a lifestyle + 3 of our favorite ways to enhance detox!

There’s a lot of buzzwords in the health and wellness world and detoxing tends to be one of the popular ones of late. While there are a lot of misconceptions about detoxing, there is a lot of truth and so much value.

The average woman uses 168 synthetic chemicals on their body every single day, and this doesn’t include the ones we’re eating, drinking and breathing! While our bodies have an incredible detoxification system in place, the levels of toxins we’re exposed to creates quite the burden on these systems.

One of the best ways to help address this is by removing the toxins from your house and daily routines. Swapping out for cleaner beauty products (make up, lotions, soaps, deodorants, etc), household cleaners, foods and beverages is going to have a huge impact. Using a quality water filter is another major step to eliminating exposure to the toxins.

Then you’ll want to focus on supporting your body’s detoxification systems. There are so many ways that you can do this, some are more effective than others and some are easier to include than others.

But one thing that we want to stress is that detoxing is not a one time fix. While doing a ‘detox’ program from time to time can be incredibly beneficial, we also need to add tools that help the everyday detox processes and make them a daily routine!

Here’s our 3 favorite ways to help enhance your body’s detoxing systems!

  1. Ionic Foot Detox

The ionic foot detox helps support and enhance our body’s detoxing processes, helping to draw out the toxins and alkalize the body through electrolysis. It’s a process of soaking your feet for 30 minutes in a saltwater foot bath with low-voltage electrical currents creating positive and negative ions. The negative ions are circulated through the body through osmosis to bind with the positively charged toxins.

Some of the benefits of the ionic foot detox include increased energy levels, reduced headaches, an enhanced sense of calm, and improved sleep. Other claims have been more specific, suggesting that ionic footpaths can support liver and kidney functions, reverse aging while clearing the skin's complexion, strengthen the immune system to better protect against diseases, and balance hormones, glucose levels and blood pressure.

  2. Dry Exfoliation

This is a simple process using a dry brush or exfoliating gloves (like the cute purple or green ones we have here at The Wellness Boutique). With these tools you’ll lightly brush the skin in a circular motion. This helps to exfoliate and remove the dead skin cells and helps to stimulate the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is our ‘garbage removal system’ of the body. It moves out all the waste from the body. The thing with the lymphatic system is it doesn’t have it’s own pump like the cardiovascular system does with the heart, so it needs help getting things moving! Dry exfoliation is very beneficial in this way, along with simple exercises like walking or rebounding (jumping on a trampoline).

You can easily add this process to your routine at home or you can come see our Massage Therapist, Sherilyn, for a massage and have Dry Exfoliation as an add on treatment for a more targeted approach. Book with Sherilyn here!

  3. Essential Oils

These beautiful gifts of the earth have many health benefits for our bodies, one of the most profound ways they can support the body is by supporting detox in the body. Lemon essential oil, along with other citrus oils like grapefruit and lime, helps to remove the toxins out of the cells. Cilantro is a great oil for helping move out heavy metals like mercury and lead (you’ll want to add a binder to this process like activated charcoal to make sure it gets out of the body).

There is also a great Detoxification Blend that helps to support the liver and kidneys as these are the main organs in our body’s detoxification system. These organs are incredible in their functions, but in today’s environment they get overloaded and need some help moving the toxins through. Adding any of these oils to your daily routine is incredibly beneficial to help move out the toxins.
